For the forth time in a row, ASMI participated in The Asian International Exhibition of Food and Drink, Hotel Restaurant & Catering Equipment Supplies and Services, Asia’s leading biennial food & hospitality trade show. The event was held in Hong Kong from May 10-13, 2005. There were more than 1,800 exhibitors from over 40 countries, and over 40,000 buyers in attendance. This year the ASMI booth space was enlarged, with an island booth placed well within the U.S. pavilion.
ASMI’s booth featured the standard trade show display case with a variety of species which attracted much interest throughout the four day show. The booth was decorated with posters containing vivid imagery of Alaska. A widescreen TV displayed video images of product harvesting and processing. Samples of smoked sockeye salmon, salmon roe (marinated Ikura) and snow crab were distributed to over 8,000 attendees. These samples were enhanced with the accompaniment of draft beer donated by the Alaskan Brewing Company, which was whole heartedly consumed by visitors. Attending the show were many importers, wholesalers, distributors, and hotel and catering professionals. ASMI staff capitalized on the opportunity to find importers for frozen Alaskan seafood. Over 250 trade leads were collected with more than 10% having specific requests for product. There were many trade members that were looking for direct imports of Alaskan seafood, including sablefish, halibut, salmon, king crab and snow crab. There were also many hotel/restaurant buyers who were seeking to source Alaskan products from local suppliers.
The show was considered a great success and greatly increased product awareness among trade members and foodservice outlets not only in the Hong Kong area, but also southern China and Southeast Asia.
