Chinese Reverse Trade/Media Mission to Seattle and Alaska

On June 18th to 27th, 2006, ASMI China organized a Chinese reverse trade/media mission to Seattle and Alaska. This mission consisted of: 12 people including 6 seafood importers from Hong Kong, Guangdong and Shanghai; 3 journalists from Shanghai and a TV crew from Shanghai TV Station.

During the 10-day trip, the group visited Alaska seafood processing plants and fish tech centers in Anchorage and Kodiak. They toured retail markets, public markets, and had one-on-one meetings with Alaska seafood exporters in Seattle. Through the trip the visitors were also able to witness Alaska’s spectacular natural scenery. It was agreed that this trade mission to Alaska was very productive, effective and successful. All of the mission members agree that ASMI had provided a rare opportunity to learn about Alaska seafood. Despite the shortness of the visit, the traders had a prime opportunity to approach suppliers and exporters face-to-face to explain their needs, talk about market demand in China and learn what Alaska can offer.? In addition, Chinese traders increased their direct knowledge of Alaska seafood, especially regarding the advanced processing and freezing technologies. At the same time, it enhanced mutual understanding and established trade relationships with the Alaska industry creating further conditions to export seafood to China. Additionally, the mission went a long way to increase Chinese trader confidence in Alaska seafood.

One container of Alaska black cod and king crab was sold after the meeting and future sales are expected as a direct result of the mission.
